SA+P's Inaugural Design Summer Camp a Resounding Success
This summer, the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) hosted a transformative two-week Design Summer Camp that captivated the minds of Baltimore elementary, middle, and high school students. Campers delved into the world of architecture and design, exploring concepts such as cross-cultural design, fractals, and the intricate relationship between math and design.
Through engaging activities like team building, sketching, and perspective drawing, students developed essential design skills. They also had the opportunity to explore cutting-edge technologies with 3D modeling, 3D printing, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Virtual Reality (VR). To foster creativity, campers also engaged in origami design projects.
The camp reached new heights with surprise visits from President David Wilson and members from the Morgan State University Board of Regents. President Wilson inspired campers to become future leaders in the built environment. Students also had the privilege of a virtual meeting with Muyiwa Oki,President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (PRIBA), gaining invaluable insights into the architectural profession.
Whiting-Turner practitioners shared their expertise in construction management and BIM, while architects and designers from the Baltimore Chapter of American Institute of Architects (AIA) introduced campers to real-world projects through design charrettes. The camp's enriching experiences culminated in a two-week journey filled with excitement and discovery.
This exceptional program was made possible through generous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and Morgan State University Center for Science Advocacy and Society.
