Summer Aid

Summer Aid

Summer financial aid is available for students who are enrolled for the summer term and have remaining aid that was not utilized during the prior fall and spring terms. The summer term is the final term in the academic year at Morgan State University. Therefore, if a student has completed the FAFSA for fall and/or spring, the application also includes the following summer. Students enrolled in summer courses will be evaluated for summer aid by the Office of  Financial Aid starting in the month of April once a summer application has been submitted. Notification of summer aid eligibility will be emailed to students at their Morgan assigned email address.

Below are the types of aid that students may be considered for, as well as circumstances that would potentially create eligibility. For aid sources other than private lenders, a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be on file with the University.

Please click the link at the bottom of the page for the Summer Financial Aid Application

*Summer 2024 aid is based on the 2023-2024 FAFSA information. If you have not completed the 2023-2024 FAFSA, you must complete it by July 10, 2024 to be considered for summer aid.

Federal Pell Grant

Students eligible for the Federal Pell Grant Program can receive up to 150 percent of their scheduled Federal Pell Grant each year. This means that if you received Federal Pell Grant Program funds for both fall and spring terms, you may qualify for Federal Pell Grant Program funds for the summer.

If you enrolled full-time (12+ hours) and received your full-time Federal Pell Grant for fall and spring, you must enroll in at least half-time (6 hours) for the summer term to be offered summer Federal Pell Grant Program funds. You must have lifetime Pell Grant eligibility remaining in order to qualify for these additional funds. Being enrolled less than half-time will result in cancellation of summer Federal Pell Grant Program funds

Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans

Students’ summer loan eligibility is based on their remaining annual loan eligibility for loans received at Morgan State University or another institution during the academic year. Students who received their annual loan limit the past fall and spring terms no longer have loan eligibility for the summer term. Federal Direct Loans require at least half-time enrollment (6 credit hours for undergraduate, 5 credit hours for graduate students). Federal Direct Loans will be canceled for students who are enrolled less than half-time.

Please note that students may not receive federal aid from multiple institutions during the same enrollment period. This would result in cancellation of aid and a resulting balance due to the University.

Per year maximums are:

  • Freshman (1-24 credits earned) $5,500 dependent, $9,500 independent
  • Sophomore (25-55 credits earned) $6,500 dependent, $10,500 independent
  • Junior/Senior (56+ credits earned) $7,500 dependent, $12,500 independent
  • Graduate – $20,500

    Federal PLUS Loans

Parent PLUS Loan-Parents of dependent undergraduate students whose combined Summer I and Summer II terms enrollment are equal to or greater than 6 credits can apply for a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan. The loan requires creditworthy borrowers, and the maximum amount a parent can receive is the total summer cost of attendance less any financial aid awarded to the student. Parents can apply for the Parent PLUS Loan at www.studentaid.gov

Graduate PLUS Loan-Graduate/professional students whose combined Summer I and Summer II terms enrollment is equal to or greater than 5 credits can apply for a Federal Graduate PLUS Loan. The loan requires creditworthy borrowers, and the maximum amount a Graduate/professional student can receive is the total summer cost of attendance less any financial aid awarded to the student. Graduate/professional students can apply for the Graduate PLUS Loan at www.studentaid.gov

    Private/Alternative Loans

Students looking to explore an alternative loan for the Summer terms should apply with a lender of their choice. We recommend that students ensure the length and number of credits meet the requirement to be eligible for the loan before applying.
