Embrace the Chapel, also known as the "Adopt a Chapel" program, has been a rich tradition here at the Morgan State University Memorial Chapel. This is where alumni organizations and groups get the opportunity to engage and support the students by joining them in worship service. It is an enriching experience for all involved!

The Purpose of Sunday Worship at the Memorial Chapel

The Morgan State University Memorial Chapel exists to provide a sacred and welcoming space where students, faculty, staff, alums, and guests may gather to worship God in spirit and in truth, grow in faith, and experience authentic community.

As a university chapel, we aim to cultivate an environment centered on Christ, spiritual formation, unity, and a sense of belonging for all members of the Morgan community.

The Chapel welcomes student organizations, alum groups, ministries, fraternities, sororities, and campus partners to participate in worship through programs like Embrace the Chapel (Adopt-a-Chapel). These partnerships foster fellowship, mentorship, and mutual support among students in worship.

What Chapel Sunday Worship Service IS

“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” -Colossians 3:17

• A Christ-centered environment dedicated to worship, prayer, reflection, and spiritual growth. (Colossians 1:18)
• The Chapel is a university facility, under the auspices of Morgan State, that serves the entire MSU community (Romans 15:7)
• A place where all are welcomed with dignity and respect
• A setting for fellowship and engagement that encourages students to pursue faith, hope, service, and community (Hebrews 10:24–25)
• An environment in which organizations and guests support and worship alongside students, fostering humility and unity (Philippians 2:3-4)

What Chapel Sunday Worship Service IS NOT

“Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction.” -1 Corinthians 1:10

• The Chapel is not a church in the sense of elders, deacons, etc.
• The Chapel does not function as a church with a pastor, elders or deacons
• The Chapel does not serve as a platform for organizational promotion, recruitment or expressions of public allegiance that supersede the worship of God
• The Chapel does not permit divisive behavior, intimidation, exclusion or spiritual coercion
• The Chapel is not intended for displays, chants, rituals, or practices that detract from the purpose of Christian worship
• Participation in Chapel services does not constitute the Chapel’s endorsement of all beliefs, traditions, or practices represented by visiting individuals or organizations
• Sunday worship services prioritize Christ and the spiritual well-being of students above all affiliations, titles or memberships

Expectations for Participating Organizations & Guests

“But everything should be done decently and in order.” -1 Corinthians 14:40

The Apostle Paul spoke to a church facing challenges with unity and order in worship. The Apostle is teaching the church at Corinth God’s desire for worship. He teaches that orderly worship is to be done with respect, clarity, and thoughtful structure, not in confusion. For us, this means that while the Spirit moves freely, it always builds up the community and honors Christ, never causing chaos or distraction.

Participation in worship is a privilege that must uphold, rather than compete with, the spiritual purpose of the Chapel Sunday service.

All participating organizations and guests are expected to:

• Honor the purpose established by the Morgan State University Founders and the intent of the worship service
• Conduct themselves in a manner that demonstrates respect, humility, and unity
• Support the mission and leadership of the Memorial Chapel at all times
• Ensure that all remarks, presentations, and forms of participation are appropriate for a Christ-centered worship environment.
• Refrain from activities or statements that elevate any organization, affiliation, or identity above the purpose of Christ and the Chapel’s defined mission, functions, and identity.

Any individual or organization that is a part of the service (whether it be Welcome/Greeting, Opening Prayer or Scripture Reading) and engages in behavior that disrupts the worship experience, or communicates messages that detract from the Christ-centered focus and spiritual purpose of Sunday worship will be restricted from future participation in Chapel programming and services. If disruptive behavior/content is displayed or communicated during Sunday worship, Chapel staff reserve the right to intervene at any point.

The Memorial Chapel reserves the right to oversee participation and maintain worship practices that align with the mission, values, and spiritual standards of the University Chapel community.

In keeping with its sacred purpose, the leadership of Morgan State University’s Memorial Chapel reserves the right, at its discretion and at any time, to restrict or decline participation or attendance by any individual, group, or organization when it deems such action necessary for the well-being and integrity of the chapel community.
