student on driving simulatorThe National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) is a free program designed to encourage middle and high school students to pursue careers in transportation. It offers a fun mix of hands-on activities, field trips, and speakers, SAT prep and activities that promote self-awareness.

NSTI has been so successful that in January 2021 Morgan State University was honored by the Council of University Transportation Centers with a national award for workforce development. NSTI has been instrumental in introducing students to a university campus, lab experience, lectures from faculty, and campus life.

Students receive a full scholarship that covers the entire cost of attending the program. Each participant receives a stipend upon completion of the program.

NSTI is open to:

Middle school students entering 7th, 8th or 9th grades and high school students entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grades. Students should have at least a 2.5 GPA (middle school students can use this GPA calculator) and high school students should have completed or be qualified to enroll in pre-algebra. The online application will have a place to upload:

  • an official transcript (or report card for middle school students)
  • a 500-700 word essay that describes your career objective(s), interest in transportation, and how NSTI can help you achieve your goals.
  • one letter of recommendation from a math, science, or technology teacher

NSTI's Partners

NSTI is funded by the NTC, the Federal Highway Administration's Office of Civil Rights, Maryland State Highway Administration, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
