Morgan State University (MSU) welcomed Secretary of the U.S. Army Christine Wormuth to campus for an all-day visit to Maryland’s Preeminent Public Urban Research University. The trip gave MSU faculty, students and administrators a prime opportunity to showcase Morgan’s research capabilities and research potential and spotlight Morgan’s Bear Battalion U.S. Army ROTC program.

Sandra Williams Ortega was stunned to see two high-ranking ROTC leaders standing on her front porch as she was coming home from classes at Morgan State College in Baltimore. The news they brought to Ortega’s parents was even more remarkable: Morgan State leaders wanted Ortega to be the candidate the university would put forth to fulfill a promise by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to give a qualified Black woman a direct commission as an officer in the still-young U.S. Air Force.

Morgan Alum Alicia Hynson Prepares to go From the Lab to the Delivery Room
Alicia Hynson is a traveling lab scientist. She spends, on average, 13 weeks at a time in hospital labs in remote locations around the United States and overseas. She initially majored in biology at Morgan State University in Baltimore, with her sights on medical school. At the advice of her mentors, she considered how gaining lab experience would be the quicker path to employment and graduated from Morgan with a bachelor’s in medical technology.
