Morgan’s Actuarial Science Students Return to Bermuda for Global Reinsurance Experience
Expanding Career Pathways and Global Networks Through Immersive Learning in the World’s Risk Capital
In a powerful demonstration of Morgan State University’s global engagement and career-driven academic philosophy, students from the University’s acclaimed Actuarial Science Program recently returned to Bermuda—the world’s capital of reinsurance—for a second year of immersive exploration and experiential learning in one of the most influential hubs in global finance and risk management.
During the March 2025 visit, fifteen students met with actuaries, executives, and early career professionals from leading international insurance and reinsurance companies, strengthening ties with the island’s robust financial sector and building upon the success of the University’s inaugural 2024 visit.
Real-World Learning at the Forefront
Morgan’s Actuarial Science Program, housed in the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, is the only program of its kind at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and one of only two such programs formally approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). The interdisciplinary curriculum blends mathematics, finance, accounting, and economics, producing graduates uniquely prepared for high-demand careers in risk analysis and insurance.

During their Bermuda visit, students engaged directly with top firms such as Somerset Re, Chubb, Symetra, Athene, Fortitude Re, and Aon. In a standout session hosted by Athene, students participated in an innovative actuarial escape room challenge, applying classroom concepts to practical problem-solving scenarios under the guidance of professional actuaries. Additional highlights included networking discussions about industry trends, career journeys, and the actuarial exam process.
Participating students cited the chance to learn from professionals in the heart of the reinsurance world as an invaluable part of the experience and a cornerstone of the trip. The opportunity allowed them to apply their skills and envision their place in this industry.
The trip also served as a launchpad for deeper community engagement and pipeline development. Students visited Bermuda’s Berkeley Institute, a local high school that has now become a recruitment partner through the University’s Summer Academy of Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences (SAAMS). In 2024, two Berkeley students attended SAAMS; in 2025, that number will grow to five, with sponsorships from six local insurance companies.
This expanding relationship was further celebrated at a closing reception hosted by the Bermuda International Long-Term Insurers and Reinsurers (BILTIR), where students connected with industry leaders and SAAMS alumni, fostering a growing network that stretches from Baltimore to Bermuda.
This experiential learning initiative is made possible through generous funding from program partners Symetra and the Spencer Foundation. Symetra’s landmark six-year, $750,000 grant has made them the largest supporter of Morgan’s Actuarial Science Program, offering students travel opportunities, hands-on industry engagement, and $20,000 in scholarships for 25 participants. Their investment is fueling the development of future actuaries who are globally aware, professionally connected, and deeply skilled.

HBCU Exposure Inspires Future Talent
Further affirming Morgan’s leadership in STEM and actuarial education, the University was recently the first stop on the Legacy Boys Weekend Trip, organized by the Legacy Foundation of Hartford. Led by Morgan alumnus Greg Jones, the initiative brought promising male students from Connecticut to tour HBCUs across Maryland and Washington, D.C., with a special focus on exploring Morgan’s nationally distinctive Actuarial Science program.
As Morgan State continues to expand its global footprint and position itself as a pipeline for underrepresented talent in actuarial science, the Bermuda reinsurance experience remains a cornerstone of this transformative vision. It is a shining example of how global engagement, community partnership, and academic rigor come together to prepare Morgan students to lead—wherever risk meets reward.
