Morgan State University Veterans Student Association

The Morgan State University Veterans Student Association (VSA) was created to unite veteran and non-veteran students with each other campus-wide.

Our intent is to create a cohesive identity for veteran students and promote a positive social environment. This association will also serve as the voice of the student veterans on campus to the university-wide committees and governing offices. We support veterans throughout the State of Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, and Virginia area.

Officer Qualifications are as follows:

  • Applicant must be a student with Military Status or
  • Be a spouse or dependent child of a veteran
  • Be a current Army ROTC Student
  • Be currently matriculating student in good academic standing
  • Have a GPA of at least 2.7 or higher

The term of the office can be one or two academic school years

All association officers are bound to the mandatory reporting policies and procedures of the Office of Student Life and Development, as well as those stipulated in the Veteran Student Association Constitution. 

The election of officers will take place at the second general meeting of the Spring semester of each academic school year. Officers will be elected by a majority vote of the members at the meeting. 

Officer Positions are as follows:

President - presides at all meetings, appoints committee chairpersons, governs all association's business ventures, events and activities, as well as serves as liaison to the Student Life Office of Student Activities.

Vice-President - assumes the duties of the President in his/her absence. This individual represents the association at the SGA Council meetings. The Vice President will also oversee that any directives put forth by the President are adhered to. He or she will also ensure that the remaining officers and association members meet and follow the VSA Constitution and its amendments.

Secretary - takes minutes at all meetings, prepares agendas, and keeps a list of members (regular and associate) consisting of names, contact numbers, and current addresses. Maintains all association records and correspondence related to business transactions to include, venue areas, supply receipts, and written and electronic letters, memos, and point of contact information for sponsors and partnering organizations. The Secretary may perform dual responsibilities under either of the additional titles of Treasurer or Events Coordinator simultaneously, with the express permission of the President and/or Vice President in the absence of elected or relieved officers of either of these positions. The Secretary will be responsible for all shared duties under both titles and will ensure to follow all university and association policies and procedures relevant to these positions.

Treasurer - is responsible for all financial transactions coming in and out of the association's account. Accepts dues from members and requests funds via Advisor(s) for transactions related to events, programs and services acquired. Maintains and submits a monthly financial reconciliation report of all activities performed. Ensures to follow all university financial policies and procedures.

Events Coordinator - is responsible for planning and implementation of all events proposed by the association officers and members. Maintains points of contact for venue service providers. Seeks venue spaces and negotiates dates, times, and negotiated contract details. Confirms association agreements and works closely with Treasurer on fund requests and deposits via the Advisor(s) for all business transactions. The Events Coordinator may perform dual responsibilities under either of the additional titles of Events Coordinator or Social Media/Marketing Representative simultaneously, with the express permission of the President and/or Vice President in the absence of elected or relieved officers of either of these positions. The Events Coordinator will be responsible for all shared duties under both shared titles and will ensure to follow all university and association policies and procedures relevant to these positions.

Social Media/Marketing Coordinator - is responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and updating of all social media sites relevant to the association. Incumbent provides photography services for all events. Creates and maintains flyers, campaign materials, and any marketing materials such as giveaways with the assistant of the Vice President and President when applicable.

Member Positions are as follows:

Regular Member - A qualified "Regular" member is one who is an enrolled student of the University holding military status or affiliations including Reservists, National Guard members, Active Duty service members, Veterans, Spouses, Dependents, or active ROTC students.

Membership Fees for this level of membership are applicable and enable these members to vote on crucial parliamentary decisions of the association as well as gain access to up to two (2) FREE paid entry passes to military-specific events/giveaways. 

Associate Member - A qualified "Associate" member is defined as any person who does NOT fall under any form of military status or affiliation as identified in "Regular Membership" guidelines. Associate members can be any student, faculty, staff, or community member who supports the mission and vision of the Veteran Student Association.

Membership Fees for this level of membership may or may not be assessed depending on the participation of this member as it related to organizational activities. Varying from discounted admission prices to special fees and/or overhead charges based on the event type or general admission costs. Various Associate membership levels are discussed at each monthly meeting and all are welcome to participate to learn more.

Association Meetings are held as follows:

The VSA Executive Board will host a mandatory monthly meeting every 2nd week of each calendar month during the academic school year in the months of August-May. This is a closed meeting with VSA Executive Board members only. The meeting format may vary depending on peak or non-peak time frames throughout the school year.

The VSA Advisory Council will host a mandatory monthly meeting every 3rd week of each calendar month during the academic school year in the months of August-May. This is a closed meeting with the VSA Executive Board and the Advisory Council members only. The meeting format may vary depending on peak or non-peak time frames throughout the school year.

The VSA Executive Board and VSA Advisory Council will host a general membership meeting every 1st week of each calendar month during the academic school year during the months of August-May with additional meetings as deemed necessary. This is an open meeting. Meeting format may vary depending on peak or non-peak time frames throughout the school year.
