Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities

Student Rights

Right to Written Notice

Students have the right to receive written notification of alleged violations, including sufficient details of the incident.

Right to Have an Advisor

Students may be accompanied by an advisor (who can be legal counsel, a faculty member, or another support person) during conduct proceedings. The advisor’s role is limited to student consultation. The student is responsible for covering any and all associated fees.

Right to a Fair and Impartial Process

All students are entitled to a fundamentally fair and impartial resolution process.

Right to the Opportunity to be Heard

Students have the opportunity to respond to the allegations and present their perspective during conferences and or hearings.

Right to Review Evidence

Students have the right to access the information and evidence that will be used during the conduct hearing.

Right to Remain Silent

Students may choose not to respond to questions during hearings. Their silence will not be interpreted as an admission of responsibility.

Right to Appeal

Students facing expulsion or suspension may appeal the decision on specific grounds such as procedural error, new evidence, or disproportionate sanctions.

Right to Privacy

Only the involved student(s) and university officials with a legitimate educational interest (i.e., those who need to know in order to carry out their professional responsibilities) may access conduct case information.

Right to Participate or Decline Participation

Students are not compelled to participate in the conduct process, though decisions will still be made in their absence.

Right to Freedom from Retaliation

Students who participate in the conduct process, whether as complainants, respondents, or witnesses, are protected from retaliation.
