From Data to Story: How to Effectively Communicate Your Science (A Special Four-Part Series, featuring Dr. Doug Dluzen)

Dr. Doug Dluzen will facilitate the four-part workshop series, From Data to Story: How to Effectively Communicate Your Science, which will progress from understanding the fundamentals of scientific storytelling to crafting pitches and visuals, and translating their work into grant-ready narratives. The series culminates with participants identifying how to tailor their message to their audience, drafting a 3-Minute Thesis (3MT)-style presentation that engages both expert and general audiences, identifying funding opportunities, and learning tools to manage their writing time effectively.

This series will be broken down into two tracks. Track 1 will primarily focus on workshops 1 and 2, and focus on broader communication skills and how to craft compelling 1-minute research pitches and 3-minute research overviews suitable for presentations and/or the 3MT competition. Track 2 will encompass all four workshops, which will also provide a deeper dive into the foundational components of grant writing for opportunities within the federal government and elsewhere, and will be held for a subset of participants.

  • Workshop 1 (virtual): The Power of Story in Science- Wednesday, February 4, 2026 (4:00 - 5:30 PM)
  • Workshop 2 (virtual): Visualizing Your Science- Tuesday, February 17, 2026 (4:00 - 5:30 PM)
  • Workshop 3 (in-person): Telling Your Science Story in a Grant Proposal – Part I- Thursday, March 5, 2026 (3:00 - 5:00 PM)
  • Workshop 4 (in-person): Telling Your Science Story in a Grant Proposal – Part II- Tuesday, March 24, 2026 (3:00 - 4:30 PM)
