Graduation & Retention
Once we've attracted students, it's important that we keep them and that we get them through to graduation. SGJC keeps an eye on both its retention rates and graduation rates.
Retention Rate
The Retention Rate is based on the percentage of first time full time freshmen who returned to MSU as sophomores. The Retention Rate for SGJC includes only those students who entered MSU in a fall semester and declared one of SGJC’s majors. Transfer students and students who enter Morgan in winter session, spring semester and summer session are not counted in the Retention Rate. The Retention Rate is calculated after the October 15 “freeze date” when the data must be reported to the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). The numbers are provided by MSU’s Office of Institutional Research.

Graduation Rate
Graduation Rate data are based on 6-year cohorts, which is how data are reported to the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). For SGJC, a cohort would be defined as that group of first time freshmen entering in a fall semester who had declared one of SGJC’s majors when they entered. Students who entered in winter session, spring semester and summer sessions or transfers students or students who changed their majors to one of SGJC’s majors are not included in the Graduation Rate. The numbers are provided by MSU’s Office of Institutional Research.
