Dr. Monica Poindexter is the Assistant Dean of the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering.  She is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).  She completed her graduate work with degrees in Civil Engineering and City Planning.

Monica Poindexter started her professional career early as an intern with IBM in high school.  She then interned with several companies within RTP, North Carolina (NC) before she moved to Atlanta, Georgia for graduate school.  While in graduate school she interned with the Federal Highway Administration, Georgia Department of Transportation, and the 1996 Olympics Committee.  She further gained experience serving as an Engineer I and Engineer II with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  After her time in NC she moved to Maryland to serve as a Department Chair for five years with a college in Baltimore.

Dr. Poindexter loves her job of educating future engineers. Some of her research interests include transportation equity, autonomous vehicles and poverty, gentrification and displacement, the impact of HBCUs in engineering education, and stem education as it relates to creating programs in areas such as semiconductors, machine learning, and AI in cybersecurity.  She believes people are called to serve by “reach one teach one” which she demonstrates everyday of her life.
