Environmental Health

Environmental Health, within the Office of Safety, Health, and Environment (OSHE), works to protect the university community and the environment by identifying, evaluating, and controlling environmental hazards. The team ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations through routine inspections, audits, and monitoring. Core responsibilities include managing hazardous, chemical, biological, and universal waste; overseeing indoor air quality; inspecting fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, and ventilation systems; and conducting water quality testing for potable water, cooling towers, and emergency eyewash stations. The unit supports laboratory safety through chemical storage inspections, spill prevention measures, and research protocol reviews. Environmental Health also provides training on topics such as hazard communication, spill response, waste handling, and environmental awareness. In emergencies, the team responds to hazardous material spills or environmental releases, coordinates cleanup efforts, and communicates with regulatory agencies. Beyond compliance, the unit promotes sustainability through recycling programs, energy conservation, and responsible purchasing. All activities are documented to ensure transparency and accountability in environmental stewardship.
