Morgan State University Has Had Its Second Successful Year of Enrollment Growth
Morgan State University announced it has had its second consecutive year of record enrollment figures. The historically Black university, otherwise known as an HBCU, surpassed 9,100 students for the 2021-2022 academic year. The increase is a 7.5% growth from the university's total student count last year, officials said.
Morgan State University Credits New Real Estate and Branding for Record-Breaking Enrollment
Morgan State University, a historically Black institution, had the highest number of students enrolled this fall. University officials attribute the campus’ infrastructure redevelopment and branding as the main draws to new students. For the past two years, the university recorded back-to-back historic enrollment figures. Enrollment surpassed 9,101 students this year and 8,469 in 2021 — a 7.5% increase that puts the university ahead of its goal of enrolling 10,000 students by 2030.
Another Type Of Homecoming: What's Behind The Jump in HBCU Enrollment?
For reasons ranging from better financial aid to academic environments that come with a safer space, young people are increasingly turning to HBCUs. Recently, Morgan State University in Baltimore was one of the HBCUs that benefitted from a settlement from the State of Maryland that gave the state’s traditionally underfunded HBCUs much-needed funding. The university also benefited from a grant from the Mackenzie Scott Foundation. While the school used the money for many things, it spent a great deal of it on making sure that students had the money they needed to stay in school, said Dr. Kara Turner, Morgan’s vice president for enrollment management and success.

Morgan State University to Build 604-Bed Student Housing Complex
Morgan State University plans to build a new residential tower to house more than 600 students, a necessity for one of the fastest-growing schools in the region. The 604-bed tower will be built adjacent to the recently completed Thurgood Marshall Housing complex and a 30,000-square-foot dining hall. The additional tower is projected to cost $110 million, according to documents filed with the Maryland Board of Public Works.
