Elementary Education

Overview of the Program

The Elementary Education Program has primary responsibility for the preparation of teachers and other professional educators. The central purpose is to prepare professionals at the undergraduate level, supported by the strong liberal arts tradition and philosophy at Morgan State University.

Mission of the Program

The mission of the Department of Teacher Education and Professional Development at Morgan State University is to prepare competent, reflective, and highly effective professionals to serve with distinction in the field of education and administration. To accomplish this mission, the department offers a comprehensive program at the undergraduate and graduate levels that relies on education, applied research, and collaborative pursuits with school, community, and university partnerships.

Programs Offered

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education
  • Certification in elementary/ middle school education (grades 1-6)

Students are required to:

  • Complete 120 credit hours
    • 53 hours of major education courses
    • 40 hours of general education courses
    • 25 hours of supporting courses
    • 2 hours of university credit
  • Acquire and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75
  • Evidence of passing Praxis I Core (Reading, Writing, Math)
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Goal Statement (essay)
  • Disposition Survey

Admission Notes:

  • Admission to the University DOES NOT constitute admission to the Teacher Education Program
  • Candidates must formally apply for admissions to the Teacher Education Program

Certification and Accreditation
Program Standards Aligned with:

  • Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) National Standards
  • The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC)
  • Certification by the Maryland State Department of Education as an Elementary Education teacher grades 1-6.
