M.A. in Psychology, Duquesne University
B.S. in Psychology, Stevenson University
Mr. Guzman is a 5th year Ph.D. candidate in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. He recently relocated to the Baltimore area, where he has lived for most of his life, as he nears completion of his doctorate degree.
Mr. Guzman identifies as a generalist interested in both "natural science" and "human science" approaches to psychology. As such, he has training in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and integrates both types of research into his scholarly work. His academic pursuits are inspired by a concern for the ways in which his work can contribute to a fairer and more equitable world for marginalized groups of people, and a desire to conduct research that contributes to a rich, nuanced understanding of human behavior and psychological functioning, rather than only attempting to measure, predict, and control it.
Mr. Guzman is interested in research that addresses the experiences of marginalized groups of people, people who develop alternative ways of acquiring knowledge, and the impact of technology on psychology and culture, utilizing methods derived from phenomenology, ethnography, and discourse analysis. His research interests also draw from the intersections of philosophical psychology and cognitive neuroscience. He is interested in how the brain and mind represent meaning and conscious experience, as well as the atypical ways in which people may experience the world when their brain functioning is altered. His dissertation focuses on the sociocultural contexts of the use of neuromodulation devices in do-it-yourself contexts.
He is also a training psychotherapist, interested in depth-oriented human science approaches to psychotherapy, such as psychoanalysis, existential-phenomenological approaches, humanistic therapy, and gestalt therapy, as well as serving clinical populations in college counseling and community mental health settings.
Mr. Guzman has previously served as a Psychology instructor at Duquesne University, where he taught Introduction to Psychology and Research Methods courses. He has a passion for teaching and mentoring students.
