Longtime Band Director Melvin Miles Reflects On Nearly 50 Years At Morgan State

Melvin Miles is an institution at Morgan State University. After enrolling as a student in 1970, Miles eventually became director of university bands, leading the marching band, symphonia band, jazz ensemble, and more. But it’s a bittersweet time on campus, as Miles prepares for his final performance. He is retiring after spending nearly 50 years at Morgan State.

Kaepernick’s relentless work—and the efforts of two other “Vanguards of Social Justice and the African-American Experience,” David Burton and David Talbert—are being recognized by Morgan State University at its spring commencement ceremonies.

Buffalo Shootings Spark Outrage, Sadness from Higher Education Leaders

For those who attend and work at the more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the news was just as heartfelt and shocking as it was in Buffalo. Morgan State University President David Wilson talked about the ongoing violence in the U.S., referencing five mass shootings last weekend, and the fact that 11 of the “lives lost were African-American.” Wilson also referenced how George Floyd’s murder galvanized much of the nation, but that the fervor to end it has ebbed. He demanded renewed action.
