Morgan State Family and Consumer Sciences Student Awarded Research Grant for Innovative Study on Baltimore’s Black Families
Breya Link, an innovative senior majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) at Morgan, has received a $1,400 grant from the University’s Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) to advance her novel community-based study. Awarded through OUR’s CreativeEdge Mini-Grant Program, the grant will support Link’s project titled “The Gems of Charm City: Out of Nothing, Everything” —a qualitative study investigating how economic stigma affects development, identity, and resilience among Black families in Baltimore.
Grounded in Ecological Systems Theory, Life Course Perspective, Relational Development Theory, and Critical Race Theory, Link's research examines how systemic inequality and societal perceptions of poverty influence children’s growth, family dynamics, and community identity.
Using a Positive Youth Development (PYD) framework, the project highlights the strengths, creativity, and relationships that enable families and youth to thrive despite facing adversity. Through interviews, focus groups, and creative documentation, her research will illustrate how faith, community, and artistic expression transform scarcity into strength.
“This project combines scientific inquiry with creative storytelling,” said Link. “By amplifying the authentic voices of Baltimore’s families and young creatives, I hope to demonstrate how resilience and brilliance flourish even amid systemic challenges.”
The research will culminate in a documentary film that elevates community voices and celebrates the everyday ingenuity found in Baltimore’s neighborhoods.
Link’s work contributes to a deeper understanding of how relational bonds, cultural pride, and creative expression can counteract economic stigma—illustrating the idea that even from nothing, everything can emerge.
The Office of Undergraduate Research provides high-impact academic programming, experiential learning, and career readiness opportunities for all students at MSU who wish to enhance their education through undergraduate research. To learn more visit https://www.morgan.edu/undergraduateresearch.
