We departed two days after Morgan's commencement. It was over 95-degrees when students walked across the stage to receive their diplomas on Saturday, May 21. Thankfully, that Monday morning the weather was ideal for us when we met at Morgan’s campus to head to Dulles International Airport to catch our flight. Check-in was quick. In addition to showing a passport, all persons traveling to Peru were required to show their COVID vaccination card and a completed affidavit that indicates we were not experiencing any signs of COVID symptoms.

After a connection in Houston, we departed for our six-hour flight to Lima, Peru! When we arrived at the Lima Airport, we were processed and found our bags on the carousel. Around 11:45 p.m. we headed to the hotel, which was located in the center of the business district of Miraflores. Thankfully, we were able to quickly check in.

The next day we left the hotel at 10 a.m. for a full day of sightseeing in Peru’s capital city of Lima. There are over 30-million residents in Peru, with 11 million residing in the coastal capital city of Lima. Our first outing was a bus tour to see the colorful colonial architecture of the city. Shortly thereafter, we toured the San Francisco Monastery where we saw one of the oldest churches and catacombs in all of South America.  We also took a short walking tour around the historic center of Lima. The group then visited one of the most famous destinations in Lima, the Larco Museum where the entire group dined. This museum is known for capturing the history of Peru.

Our first full day in Peru concluded with an evening concert performance at the Teatro de la Incas, the Ministry of Culture in Lima. The concert was sold out days before our arrival. We shared the stage with The National Youth Choir of Peru, and the only Afro-Peruvian choir in the country. As an encore, we sang one of the most famous songs in Perú, “Y Se Llama Perú,” which was broadcast all over Peru on national TV!

After the concert, we immediately returned to the hotel for a 6 a.m. departure. Our next destination – Cusco.
