Rising to a Grand Challenge: Childhood Literacy
Reading scores in Maryland are moving in the opposite direction. Despite being the nation’s fourth-most educated state and among its wealthiest, Maryland now ranks four points below the national average with over half of its schoolchildren not reading at grade level. Now, a team of researchers and practitioners from Morgan State University and the University of Maryland want to foster literacy across the state for generations to come with the help of a three-year, $3 million Grand Challenges Institutional Grant. The Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity (MILE) will harness the building blocks of language and literacy acquisition.
Morgan State University to Receive $6.8M for Two New Research Centers Focused on Microelectronics and Education Disparities
Morgan State University will receive nearly $7 million in state funds to launch two new research centers, moving the historically Black university closer to being designated with the highest classification for a research institution. Morgan State University is planning to lease 30,000 to 35,000 square feet of space in the redeveloped Hoen Lithograph building to make room for new research facilities. The historically Black university, which has its main campus in Northeast Baltimore, is planning to bring two new research centers online in July once new state funding starts
