Google Workspace Storage Changes
Overview
Google has ended unlimited storage for Google Workspace. In response, DIT is implementing a quota-based storage model to manage usage within the university’s Google storage limits.
What to Expect:
- Storage Limits: All Google accounts will be assigned a storage quota. Users will be responsible for monitoring and managing their own storage usage.
- Storage Responsibility: If you exceed the allocated storage quota, you will not be able to send or receive emails from your account, nor will you be able to add or edit files in Google Drive until you delete emails or Google Drive files to decrease your overall storage use.
What is My Storage Quota?
New Accounts
- 25 GB for enrolled students
- TBD for active faculty and staff
Existing Accounts
- For existing accounts and shared drives, you will be automatically legacied into a storage tier based on your current usage.
Storage Limits for Students
Default Storage:
| Storage Limit | Available To |
|---|---|
| 25 GB | New Students |
Each new student account will be allotted a maximum storage of 25GB.
Current Students:
Current students whose usage currently exceeds the 25GB limit will receive a one-time adjustment, rounded up to the next multiple of 10GB (e.g., a student using 27GB will be allotted 30GB), not to exceed 1TB. Storage overages will no longer be adjusted after the one time Fall 2025 increase.
Stay within your Storage Limit:
It is important to regularly check your storage levels to ensure you remain within your limit. Exceeding your limit can interrupt your ability to send or receive emails, upload new files, or sync data in Google Workspace. Staying within your limit helps keep your account active and functioning properly.
