The Mission of the Department of Nursing

The mission of the Morgan State University Department of Nursing (MSUDN) is to demonstrate excellence in education, scholarship, practice and service by nurturing the next generations of nurses in a community grounded in social justice, diversity, innovation and health equity - to prepare our graduates to serve as leaders and innovators in nursing and healthcare.

The Morgan State University Master of Science (Department of Nursing) offers a 43 credit degree. The graduate program's primary emphasis is preparing graduates for the roles of Nurse Educator and Leadership/Management in Nursing. The Department of Nursing graduate programs contribute to the profession by offering advanced education in a milieu that spurs scholarly development. The standards and expectations of the program are fully outlined in the Master of Science (Department of Nursing) Handbook.

The Master of Science (Department of Nursing) Program curriculum incorporates the standards for Graduate Nursing Education as outlined by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), The Essentials of Master's Education in Nursing (2011). Core coursework and concentration specific courses all build on the previous learning of the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree. Course requirements include advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, contexts of health care, epidemiology, health care policy and law, health care information management, leadership and management, nursing research, and evidence-based practice.

Admission to the Master of Science (Nursing) Program:

This is a Morgan-Flex course offering face-to-face instructions with real-time virtual course content streaming capabilities. The instructor will be physically present in the classroom, allowing students the option to attend either in person or virtually via Zoom.

Note: Anyone wishing to apply in the fall will be required to adhere to the following updated and added requirements:

  • Two (2) years practice as a registered nurse (RN)
  • Earned B.S. in Nursing from a CCNE, NLN or State approved institution.
  • 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 grading scale in all undergraduate course work
  • Must submit an APA formatted Statement of your philosophy of nursing
  • Must submit three professional letters of recommendation
    If the applicant's native language is not English, the applicant must complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum average score of 550 and no sub-score below 52 (paper version) or 79 with no sub-score below 17 internet based test).

Application Process

The Morgan State University Master of Science (Nursing) Program application is a multi-step process;

Step 1: Each student must complete the School of Graduate Studies electronic application.
Step 2: Students qualified by the Graduate School will then be reviewed to determine if they meet the Nursing Program's criteria.
Step 3: Students who meet the criteria for both the Graduate School and the Master of Science (Nursing) Program will be invited for an interview.
Step 4: Once the interview has been completed, the Admissions Committee will consider all information and make a final determination.

NOTE: If the applicant's native language is not English, the applicant must complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum average score of 550 with no subscore below 52 (paper version) or 79 with no subscore below 17 internet based test).

Conditional Admission: An applicant who has not completed all of the requirements for full admission may be admitted conditionally to the Master of Science (Nursing) program. Students admitted with a conditional status must complete the unmet requirement(s) in the designated time established by the Graduate School. The student must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 grading scale throughout the conditional status. Upon completion of requirements the Graduate Coordinator will submit a request to the Graduate School Office to lift the conditional status.
