The Society for the Advancement of Computer Science

The computer science club at Morgan State University is informally known as SACS, the Society for the Advancement of Computer Science. Founded in 1964 and guided by its founding advisor Ms. Cynthia Harvey, the organization began as a community of students from a variety of majors who supported early Computer Science instruction before the major was fully established.

In 1976, SACS became a student affiliate of the Association for Computing Machinery. Although the organization is recognized in official documentation as Association for Computing Machinery Morgan State University, the SACS name continues to honor our origins and serves as a familiar identity for alumni.

Our Evolution

During its early years, SACS drew members from many academic backgrounds because computing programs at Morgan were still developing. Today, the club is primarily composed of students majoring in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, and other technology focused disciplines. This shift reflects the growth of computing on campus and the rising interest in careers within software engineering, cybersecurity, data science, and artificial intelligence.

Our Goals

At SACS, we equip our students to lead, build, and thrive through core goals that guide our work. These goals include:

• Partnering with organizations to expand career opportunities
• Hosting technical workshops each semester
• Offering tutoring support for Computer Science courses
• Helping members secure meaningful internships and full time roles
• Providing scholarships to reduce financial strain
• Enabling mentoring from peers, alumni, and industry professionals

Our Vision

SACS aims to create partnerships that provide students with access to the resources and networks needed for long term success. This includes job opportunities, training sessions, workshops, and a mentoring program that connects members with experienced professionals who offer guidance and support for career development.

The Society of the Advancement of Computer Science (SACS) exists to:

• Create network and job opportunities
• Engender mentorship opportunities
• Sharpen the technical and professional skills of members
• Showcase the diverse and vast talent pool of Morgan State University

The organization’s goals are:

• To partner with over 15 different companies/organizations to provide Computer Science students at Morgan State University with access to opportunities for growth, development, and career advancement.
• To provide technical workshops throughout the semesters that will allow students to develop their technical skills in their respective fields of interest.
• Offer tutorship opportunities for Computer Science students here at Morgan State University, aimed at helping them in their CS classes. (Note: May be limited to the skillset of the tutors at the time).
• To help at least 10 students in SACS land career changing opportunities through their involvement & participation in SACS.
• Provide scholarships to CS students to help alleviate any financial burden that may impact their completion of their college education.
• Provide every member of SACS with the opportunity to be mentored by a knowledgeable member or partner of SACS.
