Jiangnan Peng Awarded $914k from FDA to Assess and Authenticate Botanical Products
Dr. Jiangnan Peng, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, has been awarded $914,600 from the Food and Drug Administration as a cooperative agreement for two years to develop methods to authenticate and assess botanical drug products. The proposal, entitled "NMR- and SFC/MS-based Metabolomics Approaches for the Authentication and Assessment of the Quality of Botanical Raw Materials," is a collaborative effort of several faculty members of the School, Dr. Fasil Abebe, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Dr. Saroj Pramanik, Associate Professor of Biology.

Congratulations to Dr. Willie E. May, Professor of Chemistry and Vice President for the Division of Research and Economic Development, for his election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)! Dr. May is also an American Chemical Society (ACS) Fellow, a distinction he received in 2011.
Fasil Abebe Awarded $438k to Develop Cell Imaging Techniques
Dr. Fasil Abebe, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, has been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study and develop sensors for imaging copper in living human cells. His proposed research project, "Fluorescent Sensors for Subcellular Copper Imaging in Live-cells," is expected to total $438,502 over the period of September 6, 2019 through July 31, 2022.
NIH-RISE Program Renewed with $1.8M Grant
The NIH Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (RISE) Program is offered through the support of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The RISE Program is designed to diversify the pool of students who complete a Ph.D. degree in biomedical research fields through effective, evidence-based approaches to student training, mentoring, and career development.
