Residency Weekend School of Education & Urban Studies

Kicking Off Fall 2025 with Residency Weekend

by Morgan State U
September 04, 2025

In August, the Department officially kicked off our Fall 2025 Residency Weekend for our gradaute students. The energy in the room was inspiring!

In her welcome address, Dean Glenda Prime reminded all students of the importance of community, scholarship, and leadership in shaping the future of education. Dr. Frim Ampaw, Department Chair, emphasized the importance of students learning from one another.

This is our third residency, and it marks an exciting milestone: the launch of two new doctoral programs: PhD in Education with a concentration in Comparative & International Education, and PhD in Education with a concentration in Assessment, Evaluation, and Research. With these additions, we are expanding opportunities for students at an HBCU to engage in rigorous scholarship, innovative practice, and meaningful dialogue about the challenges and possibilities in higher education and beyond.

When we asked our new students, “Why did you choose to pursue your graduate studies at Morgan State University?” their answers reminded us exactly why this work matters:

  • “One of my biggest goals was to obtain a terminal degree from an HBCU that would help grow me as an individual and professional.”
  • “I am at a stage in my life where centering Blackness in my education is paramount.”
  • “Morgan’s low-residency option gave me the flexibility to pursue both personal and academic goals.”
  • “I chose Morgan because its mission spoke to my heart. I know this doctoral program will get me closer to impacting lives.”
  • “Why not Morgan, would be the better question!”

Others shared that Morgan’s unique academic offerings, alignment with their research interests, and strong sense of community made the decision clear:

  • “The curricula is aligned with my research interest. I looked through every HBCU doctoral program in the nation & Morgan’s was the most put together.”
  • “I wanted to align myself, my studies, and my research with an institution whose mission and values are centered in equity and accessibility.”
  • “I started my higher education journey at an HBCU so I wanted to end at an HBCU.”

Residency weekends are more than just academic gatherings; they are moments to connect, share ideas, and build the network of scholars, educators, and leaders who will shape the future of education.

We are proud of our students (new and returning) and are excited to see all that they will accomplish as part of this vibrant Morgan State University community.

Here’s to a fantastic Fall 2025 Residency Weekend!
