Research

Our faculty and student scholars engage in critical research on the challenges evident across the P-20 educational pipeline.

Here are some examples of our projects:

Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (TRAILS)
Funded by a $20 million award from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the TRAILS Institute is focused on transforming the practice of AI from one driven primarily by technological innovation to one that is driven by ethics, human rights, and input and feedback from communities whose voices have previously been marginalized. We investigate what trust in AI looks like, how to create technical AI solutions that build trust, and which policy models are effective in sustaining trust.

Collaborative for Research in Urban STEM Education
The Maryland Collaborative for Research in Urban STEM Education (MD-CRUSE) is an NSF funded project designed to build a sustainable transdisciplinary, inter-institutional community of STEM education researchers and K-12 educators.

DMV MSI STEM Alliance
A transdisciplinary conference to address two persistent issues: The low number of researchers from Minority Serving Institutions, and the barriers to STEM access, inclusion, and success.
