Admission

Admission into the Ph.D. Program is in the fall semester only. All applications must be completed by creating an account and submitting Application through Morgan State's School of Graduate Studies. The primary deadline for completed applications is February 1. Completed applications must include all supporting documents before they can be considered for review. Incomplete applications may not reach the department's review committee.

Residency Requirements and Time Limits

  • Students must enroll in a minimum of 9 credit hours per semester. All courses must typically be taken at Morgan State University. Although 9 credit hours may seem low, doctoral students with 9 credit hours are considered full time students and are expected to attend and engage in noncurricular activities (e.g., research presentations by other doctoral students, faculty, and invited guests) and such expectations may be incorporated as requirements in some seminars.
  • Students must complete the requirements of the minor area (business teaching) before taking the major comprehensive exams.
  • Students must pass written and oral comprehensive examinations. Written and oral comprehensive examinations covering the major area of study are scheduled by the fall of the third year of enrollment in the program.
  • A dissertation proposal must be successfully defended within 12 months of passing the comprehensive examination in the area of specialization.
  • All requirements for the program must be completed by the end of the sixth year. An extension of not more than one academic year may be granted by the Doctoral Program Committee under extenuating circumstances.

Advising

The Finance Ph.D. Program has one academic advisor for all students. This person will be assigned upon enrollment in the program and provide the student with an individual program of study. The advisor provides guidance to the student on matters relating to the program. This person is NOT the doctoral advisor for the student's research. After successfully passing the major comprehensive exams, the student advances to candidacy. The doctoral candidate selects a chairperson who act as the dissertation advisor and helps the candidate to form a dissertation committee consisting of other faculty members. Together this team oversees the completion of the research effort.
