Academic Programs and Benefit Eligibility

2.) What are the qualifications to receive VA Educational benefits?

The qualifications vary based on the military status and service time of the veteran or benefit sponsor. For eligibility requirements, the student can go to www.va.gov/education.

4.) How do I decide between the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) and the Post-9/11 GI Bill?

The Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30) and the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) have different eligibility requirements and offer different educational benefits. Click the previous links to see the differences between the two benefits.

5.) What are the eligibility requirements for the Veteran Readiness & Employment Program (Chapter 31) benefits?

Eligibility for the Veterans Readiness & Employment Program Benefits are dependent on a combination of the following requirements:

  • The applicant received an honorable discharge or other than dishonorable discharge upon separation
  • The applicant received a service-related disability of 10% or more from the VA.
  • The applicant has a severe medical injury or illness due to your assignments while serving on Active Duty
  • The applicant is on Active Duty and can obtain a VA memorandum rating of 20% or more from the DVA
  • A Participant in the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) rating
  • The applicant has at least 1 day of Chapter 33 Post 9/11 benefits remaining.
  • The applicant can report for an evaluation with a VR&E counselor before separating from active duty

6.) Are there benefits for the dependents of Vietnam Veterans?

Yes. There is now one federal program that is available for dependents of Vietnam Veterans:

7.) Can I receive VA Educational benefits if I'm part-time?

Yes. Part-Time students can receive benefits that are re-calculated at a half-time or part-time rate by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
