Alumni Spotlights

Lamar A. Williams, '08

Civil Engineering, Baltimore City DOT-Conduits

Degrees Obtained from the School of Engineering:

Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering

Current Profession and Employer:

I work for Baltimore City DOT-Conduits & previously I worked for Baltimore County DEPS

What do you like most about your current profession?

Serving the Public.

How did the Mitchell SOE prepare you for your career?

The rigorous training and encouragement to read more than just the textbook for the class but to read 4-6 textbooks for each class.

Who, from the SOE, had the most impact on you during your time there, and how have they impacted you?

Mr. Carl Page; he was the Civil Engineering Dept''s Lab Technician but he was so much more than a lab technician. He was well read, educated, kind, caring, respectful and constant Professional. I am glad to have known him prior to his earthly body succumbing to sarcoidosis. I consider his family to be my family. Dean DeLoatch also listened to my concerns every Friday evening. He was very approachable.

What advice would you give to current SOE students?

Have an exit strategy, be organized, study hard at least 40-50 hours per week, coordinate with a tutor, classmates, and if you still don't get it meet with the Professor during their office hours.

Anything else you'd like to add?

My only concern is that very few Civil Engineering Graduates obtain our P.E. license.
