Summer Academy of Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences

Program Overview

The Summer Academy of Actuarial and Mathematical Sciences (SAAMS) Program is a rigorous academic enrichment program designed to foster excitement among high school students in Mathematics, Actuarial Science and Computer Science. Students spend sxi weeks on the beautiful campus of the designated national treasure, Morgan State University (Maryland), and attend Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Computer Science classes. The applicants are selected through a competitive application and interview process, and applicants who are accepted into the SAAMS Program are rewarded a stipend. Students also attend program-related field trips and professional development sessions.

The ultimate goal of the SAAMS Program is to increase the number of students from underrepresented communities who pursue Mathematics, Actuarial Science and Computer Science-related majors in college and, ultimately, careers. However, SAAMS welcomes any student who is passionate about Mathematics, Actuarial Science and Computer Science, is motived to attend Morgan State University and excel academically.

Program Details

SAAMS students attend Mathematics and Computer Science classes each day, Monday through Friday, during the six-week program. The program offers a Mathematics course, and an Introduction to Actuarial Science course which emphasizes examples and case studies related to the field.

In addition to Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Computer Science coursework, students participate in case studies, professional development seminars, program-related field trips, and other enrichment activities.

The benefits of participation in the SAAMS Program extend well beyond textbook knowledge. Students are able to investigate various careers in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Computer Science, obtain exposure to the rigorous academic environment that is characteristic of these disciplines, acquire important time management and study skills, and also work on their critical thinking, civic awareness, team-building and leadership abilities. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the majors in Mathematics, Actuarial Science*, and Computer Science offered by the School of Computer, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences.

*Morgan's Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science is the only such program in the state of Maryland.

Eligibility

SAAMS accepts students who are preparing to enter the 12th grade or approved for high school graduation. High school graduates who plan to begin studies in the fall at Morgan's School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences are also welcome to apply. Applicants are selected through a competitive application and interview process.
