What to Bring & Want NOT to Bring

Welcome to our residence halls! We're excited to have you join our community. While your comfort is important, your safety is our top priority. To help ensure a safe and comfortable living environment for everyone, please review the following list of permitted and prohibited items.

What to Bring

The following items are permitted in the residence halls:

  • Air fresheners
  • Alarm clock
  • Batteries
  • Bowls, paper plates, plastic utensils, napkins, paper towels, etc.
  • Chargers for laptop, phone, and electronic devices
  • Cleaning supplies
    • broom, mop, dustpan, ready-to-use cleaning supplies.
  • Clothing items: 
    • shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, suits, ties, socks, undergarments, shoes, etc. (please pack for Fall, Winter, Summer, and Spring) 
  • Clothes hangers
  • Desk fan (not to exceed 20 in.)
  • Desk lamp (no halogen bulbs)
  • Flashlight
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Iron/w auto shut-off
  • Mini ironing board
  • Laptop
    • wifi is available across the campus
  • Laundry bag/hamper
  • Laundry detergent
  • Linens
    • twin XL sheets, blankets,  pillows, a mattress pad/mattress cover, towels, etc.
  • Disposable Masks
  • Method of transportation (scooter, bike, skateboard, vehicle) *optional*
    • please bring a heavy-duty lock and register your bike with MSPUD upon arrival
  • Microwave (no larger than 600 watts)
  • Mini refrigerator (no larger than 3.6 cubic feet)
  • Non-alcoholic beverages
  • Printer
  • Rain gear
    • umbrella, poncho, rain boots, etc.
  • Room decor
    • you may add simple furnishings, posters & accessories to your room, however, you MAY NOT remove any furniture, paint your room, apply wallpaper or contact paper, or alter it in any way. You will be held responsible for any damages made to the wall using 3M Command strips or adhesive LED light strips.
  • School supplies
    • notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, textbooks, highlighters etc.
  • Shower caddy 
  • Shower curtain
  • Shower sandals/shoes
  • Small area rugs
  • Small Bluetooth speakers
  • Snacks
  • Study lamp
  • Surge protectors
  • Toiletries
    • toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, shampoo & conditioner, face wash, moisturizer, cologne/perfume, sunscreen, deodorant, body wash, makeup, hair dryer, curling iron, hair ties, lotion, etc.
  • Towels & washcloths 
  • Trash can/wastebasket (not to exceed 8 gallons)
    • trash bags
  • TV (not to exceed 32 in.)
    • TVs cannot be mounted/permanently affixed to any walls or university-owned furniture
  • Water bottles

What Not to Bring

The following items are prohibited in the residence halls:

  • Alcohol
  • Candles/incense
  • Cooking appliances
    • air fryers, grills, instant pots, microwave ovens (over 600 watts), toasters, toaster ovens, pressure cookers, rice cookers, roaster ovens, hot plates, slow cookers, waffle makers, coffee makers, woks, etc. are prohibited
  • Curling irons or flat irons without automatic shut-off
  • Darts/dart boards
  • Drugs of any kind
  • Electric water coolers
  • Explosives/fireworks
  • Furniture that is not compliant with CAL 117 fire rating – to include bean bag chairs, upholstered desk chairs, ottomans, curtains, headboards, and mattresses (if a special mattress is required for medical purposes, the student must register with the Office of Student Disabilities Support Services so the proper accommodations can be made).   • Halogen lamps/multi-bulb gooseneck lamps
  • High-end electronics including but not limited to:
    • Large speakers that exceed a decibel range higher than 90
    • Soundbars/surround sound
    • TVs larger than 32 inches
  • Hookah pipes, e-cigarettes, or vapes of any kind
  • Hoverboards
  • Microwave (larger than 600 watts)
  • Personal air conditioners, ceiling fans, and other appliances including portable washers and dryers
  • Personal family heirloom items
  • Personal satellite dishes
  • Pets
    • Space heaters
    • Wallpaper or contact paper
    • Waterbeds
    • Weapons
      • knives, blades, guns, mase, tasers, self-defense spike
    • Massage beds, lash beds, acrylic/gel nail equipment and products, barber/salon chairs, etc. 
      • Although we encourage your entrepreneurial pursuits, you cannot operate any form of business from the residence halls.
