Baltimore Blue Core

Welcome to the Baltimore Blue Core!

Blue Core stands for BLUE space COllaborative REsearch for Urban Coastal Access and Climate Resilience in South Baltimore. Through community engagement and knowledge co-production, our team aims to work with communities to generate the insights needed to enhance access to coastal blue-green spaces for the benefit of South Baltimore communities. Together, we can create a healthier, more resilient South Baltimore.

Baltimore's Coastal Blue-Green Spaces

Coastal blue-green spaces are defined as the combination and intersection of coastal water systems adjacent to green landscapes such as natural areas and parks. Such areas can generate numerous benefits to both the environment and people, such as urban heat island mitigation, stormwater runoff control, and outdoor recreation and leisure opportunities that can help improve mental and physical health. Baltimore City is a coastal city - comprised of 61 miles of coastal shoreline that supports waterfront activities, tourist attractions, local and international businesses, and more. However, many Baltimore neighborhoods - including those in South Baltimore - have limited access to the coast. This prevents coast-adjacent communities such as Brooklyn, Curtis Bay, Cherry Hill, and Brooklyn Park from receiving the benefits of coastal access to blue-green spaces. BLUE CORE aims to generate co-produced research to improve and enhance access to coastal blue-green spaces.
