Baltimore City is facing a critical school nurse shortage, but relief is coming from three university nursing programs. The district has about 50 registered nurses to cover more than 150 schools. The school system never fully recovered from the shortage that has impacted health care nationwide.

Morgan State University's Department of Nursing has been given a $4.4 million contract from Baltimore City Public Schools to address shortages of school nurses. The contract allows Morgan State's Department of Nursing to support pediatric nursing services within health suites at five schools throughout the city.
