MY HEART WEEPS
Dear Morgan Family,
A horrific atrocity has occurred in Memphis, Tennessee. By now, many of you may be aware of the circulated video recording of the heartless viciousness that led to the death of Tyre Nichols. I strongly encourage you not to view it.
Cries of “mama” will forever be with me, as these are the painfully chilling words Tyre Nichols desperately called out to his mother to rescue him from such fatal brutality. Hearing yet another cry from a Black man calling to his mother or painfully declaring “I can’t breathe” while trying to hold on to his life is beyond disturbing. The fact that these tragic incidents continue to involve law enforcement is also very troubling.

As the biological father of a son and the adopted father of 9,350 sons and daughters of Morgan, viewing this murder was quite emotional for me—knowing how pervasive and indiscriminate violence and the very worst of inhumanity can be. We must do better as a society. We must value human life.
The Morgan family is holding Tyre’s soul up high today and in the many days that follow. And with his entire family, we, too, are grieving. An offer of our condolences and prayers goes out to them during this dark time.
Wake up, America! We are slowly losing our way. As in all things dutiful in life, I am reminded that each of us can do our part and harness the power of our intellect, talents and passions for the greater good. And so, my challenge to Morganites this day is to double down and commit yourselves to changing the course of this nation as you blossom into the leadership roles that await you.
In times like this, please remember that counselors in the University Counseling Center are always available for those in need of assistance. The Center can be reached at 443-885-3130.
I’m in mourning this morning!
