Morgan State University Welcomes Lumina Foundation Board for Immersive Campus Visit and Strategic Engagement
BALTIMORE — Morgan State University hosted members of Lumina Foundation’s Board of Directors on Wednesday, March 25, as part of the organization’s three-day spring retreat in Baltimore—offering national philanthropic leaders a firsthand look at one of the country’s fastest-rising research universities and its impact on student success and degree attainment.
Indianapolis-based Lumina, which is committed to expanding equitable access to post-high school education and increasing attainment across the United States, selected Morgan as the site for a full day of engagement, exploration, and dialogue. The visit underscored the growing alignment between Lumina’s national priorities and Morgan’s mission-driven work to advance opportunity, innovation, and academic excellence.

Led by Lumina Board member and Morgan President David K. Wilson, the Board began its visit with a comprehensive campus tour that highlighted the University’s academic strengths, cutting-edge research, and student-centered initiatives. The day also opened with a special performance by the renowned Morgan State University Choir at the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center, setting a welcoming tone for the visit.
From there, Board members explored several of Morgan’s signature facilities and home to many leading academic degree programs, including the Center for Equitable Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Systems (CEAMLS) within the School of Engineering, the School of Architecture and Planning’s Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies (CBEIS), and the Health and Human Services Center’s nursing simulation labs. Each stop offered a concise but impactful look at the University’s commitment to preparing students for high-demand careers while addressing real-world challenges.
Among the early highlights of Lumina’s visit to the National Treasure was a serendipitous moment in the Calvin and Tina Tyler Hall Student Services Center, where two tours unexpectedly converged. A group of higher education administrators crossed paths with an energetic campus tour of prospective high school students from California. The chance encounter offered an opportunity for greetings from President Wilson and engaging exchanges between the two groups.
The tour also showcased Morgan’s vibrant campus life and ongoing transformation, including visits to the University Student Center—featuring its Civil Rights exhibit—and the redeveloped Northwood Commons, a key anchor in the University’s community revitalization efforts.
Following the tour, the Board convened in the Martin D. Jenkins Hall Behavioral and Social Science Center for a series of focused sessions with Morgan leadership, faculty, and students. President Wilson delivered an overview of “Morgan State Today,” highlighting the University’s continued growth, expanding research portfolio, and leadership in advancing degree completion—particularly among adult learners and underserved populations.
Additional discussions centered on Morgan’s innovative approaches to student success and on the integration of artificial intelligence into teaching, learning, and institutional strategy. A student panel provided candid perspectives on the Morgan experience, reinforcing the University’s commitment to academic excellence, support, and opportunity.
Throughout the day, Lumina Board members emphasized their desire for meaningful dialogue, with presentations intentionally concise to allow for robust discussion and engagement. This approach fostered deeper understanding and collaboration.

“This visit provided a powerful opportunity for my colleagues on Lumina’s Board to experience firsthand the transformative work taking place at Morgan,” said President Wilson. “As a rising research university, we are deeply aligned with Lumina’s mission to expand access, improve student success, and increase degree attainment nationwide. Hosting the Board on our campus not only allowed us to showcase our strengths but also to engage in meaningful conversations about how institutions like Morgan can continue to drive impact at scale. It is through partnerships like this that we collectively move the needle on educational equity and opportunity in America.”
The visit further strengthened Morgan’s relationship with Lumina and reinforced the University’s role as a national model for innovation in higher education—particularly in advancing pathways for student achievement, adult learning, and workforce readiness.
With a day marked by discovery, dialogue, and shared purpose, the Board’s time at Morgan State University reflected a mutual commitment to shaping a more equitable and prosperous future through education.
