Since arriving at Morgan State University in 2001, Jocelyn Turner-Musa, Ph.D., has built a distinguished record of leadership, scholarship and service within the James H. Gilliam, Jr. College of Liberal Arts (CLA). That legacy of excellence now reaches new heights with her election as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA)—one of the discipline’s highest honors. Dr. Turner-Musa, professor and chair of the Department of Psychology, earned this recognition from APA Division 1, The Society for General Psychology and Interdisciplinary Inquiry, in acknowledgment of her impactful contributions to the field.

Election to Fellow status in the APA recognizes an individual’s outstanding contributions and impact within the field of psychology. The rigorous selection process is highly selective, requiring peer nomination, review by the Division Fellows Committee, and approval by both the APA Board of Directors and the Council of Representatives.

“It is truly a privilege to be recognized by the American Psychological Association and Division 1: The Society for General Psychology and Interdisciplinary Inquiry as an APA Fellow,” said Dr. Turner-Musa. “Elevation to the status of Fellow recognizes contributions to the profession through my commitment to advancing psychological science through teaching, leadership, and service.  This is an honor I share with my colleagues in the Department of Psychology and is an honor for Morgan State University.”

Division 1, The Society for General Psychology and Interdisciplinary Inquiry, is dedicated to promoting connections across psychology’s diverse evidence-based specialties, other scientific disciplines, and the humanities. Its mission emphasizes integrating concepts, methods, and theories to advance understanding of human thought, behavior, and social life across historical, cultural, genetic, neural, and biological contexts.

In 2020, Dr. Turner-Musa was voted president-elect of the American Psychological Association Division 1 (Society for General Psychology). The American Psychological Association is a leading national scientific and professional organization for psychology comprising more than 121,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students as its members. As president, she oversaw the APA division’s focus on promoting consistency among the diverse specialties within the psychology profession by encouraging members to incorporate multiple perspectives from psychology’s sub-disciplines into their research, theory, and practice.

Dr. Turner-Musa’s recognition underscores Morgan State University’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, scholarship, and leadership in the sciences and humanities.
