Thailand: The Journey Begins in Bangkok
The tour opened in Bangkok, Thailand, a vibrant city known for its temples, markets, and cultural heritage. The choir visited iconic landmarks such as the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew and explored local life at the Maeklong Railway and Damnoen Saduak Floating Markets. A highlight was their concert at Christ Church Bangkok, where the ensemble performed to an enthusiastic crowd of over 300, sharing the stage with the Bangkok Choral Society. The performance was lauded for its spirited delivery and cultural resonance.
Malaysia: Harmonies in Kuala Lumpur
In Kuala Lumpur, the choir participated in cultural exchanges and delivered powerful performances, including a Sunday service and a benefit concert at Kuala Lumpur Baptist Church. The ensemble was warmly welcomed and engaged in musical collaborations with local choirs. Between events, the group experienced the architectural marvel of the Petronas Towers and explored the city’s diverse religious and cultural landmarks.
Singapore: Innovation and Cultural Exchange
Singapore offered the choir opportunities for both performance and leisure. The group visited the Singapore Botanic Gardens—home to over 60,000 orchid species—and the awe-inspiring Gardens by the Bay. The choir performed with the Voices of Singapore in a well-received public concert featuring joint selections in multiple languages. Members also explored the city’s multicultural quarters and enjoyed panoramic views from the iconic Marina Bay Sands.
Hong Kong: A Triumphant Finale
The tour culminated in Hong Kong, where the ensemble explored the city's towering skyline, bustling markets, and spiritual sites. Despite rain and overcast skies, the choir performed its final concert at the Methodist International Church in collaboration with the Hong Kong Women’s Choir. The program closed with a dramatic joint performance of Verdi’s Va, Pensiero. A farewell dinner featuring local cuisine, including Peking Duck, capped off the evening.
On their final day, the choir journeyed to the Po Lin Monastery to visit the famed Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) via a scenic 3.5-mile cable car ride. The group took part in a serene vegetarian lunch and reflected on their experiences during a closing ceremony led by President Wilson.
A Tour to Remember
The 2025 Southeast Asia Tour offered the Morgan State University Choir a platform not only to share its world-class musical talents but also to foster cross-cultural understanding, represent the University globally, and inspire communities through the power of music. This extraordinary journey left indelible impressions on all who participated and served as a celebratory capstone for recent graduates—an elegant crescendo to their collegiate journey.
