Calling for Humanity in the Face of Atrocity
Images of war—regardless the setting or motivation—are difficult to rationalize. And what we are seeing transpire with the invasion of Ukraine is particularly troubling. Seeing so many people lose their lives and their homes as they stand tall in the defense of democracy is hard to stomach. A sovereign nation should not fall to subjugation simply because another possesses the urge and power to do so.
Our hearts weep for the loss of innocent Ukrainian lives, and we join the voices of democracy in calling for the cease of this reckless violation of international law. For as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so once poignantly expressed, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
Morgan is a proud institution, 154-years-old, with a diverse population of more than 8,500 students coming from roughly 44 states and nearly 70 countries—one of which is Ukraine. We are one of the nation’s most welcoming institutions representing a community that extends well beyond our campus borders. Accordingly, when something of this magnitude erupts on the world stage, our collective humanity cannot turn a deaf ear or blind eye to these events.
Hoping for a peaceful ending to this invasion before more innocent lives are lost.
Yours in humanity,
David K. Wilson
President
