Giving Students a Global Perspective

As American academics seek to infuse more courses with a global perspective, the result could be compared to the assortment of animals that visit an African watering hole. There’s an astonishing variety of species, of many shapes and colors, each as different from the other as a giraffe is from a leopard. No one academic internationalization structure is dominant. The old standard approaches are there: study-abroad programs or international-relations departments. But new options have also evolved: global studies majors and minors and a dizzying variety of virtual-exchange options, allowing for online intercultural interactions. Morgan State University, in Baltimore, is exploring what it means to be a “Global HBCU.” A division of international affairs, founded in 2013, has been strengthening Morgan State’s study abroad program, recruiting international students, and internationalizing the curriculum.
