A Red Brick ‘Spite Wall’ was Built Along Morgan State’s Campus in 1942, This Week it Came Down

Morgan State University students heading to history and political science classes Tuesday morning passed a bulldozer toppling a brick wall behind Jenkins Hall and its classrooms. The wall, built in 1942 by one of the city’s largest real-estate brokers to separate the school’s Black students from nearby white neighborhoods, was knocked down by the afternoon.

For most of a century, a racist eight-foot “spite wall” erected to divide a historically Black college from an adjoining White neighborhood stood in Baltimore — a reminder of a time when Jim Crow was embodied in bricks and mortar. The wall, which Morgan State University President David K. Wilson called “a loud symbol of hate in our community,” came down.

Some thought it was a simple alley; others thought perhaps it protected a few garages. Grants Awarded to 2 Maryland HBCUs to Expand High-Speed Internet Access

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Morgan State University were awarded more than $7.1 million from the Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program to expand high-speed internet access. The program is run by the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration and is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Internet for All initiative.
