Department of History, Geography, and Museum Studies


Undergraduate Studies

In addition to meeting the requirements below, students must also complete six credits in the Liberal Arts Core and have with no outstanding grades below "C" in the major or required supporting courses.  Major courses are distributed among skill levels and geographical areas, allowing a wide variety of historical content and approaches. All courses are classified under as HIST-XYZ:

Majors will select a track in either General or African/African-American history; Pre-Law; or International History and Diplomacy:

General History (57 credit hours): Required courses + 

  • 9 credit hours from Division 1
  • 9 hours from Division 2, and 12 hours from Division 1, 2, or 3
  • 6 hours in a foreign language (two sequential courses in the same language)
  • 9 hours of supporting courses (confer with departmental advisor or chairperson)

African/African-American History (60 credit hours): Required courses +

  • 12 credit hours: 351, 352, 362, 371, 372 
  • 3 hours: GEOG 207
  • 6 hours in a foreign language (two sequential courses in the same foreign language). 
  • 21 hours from the following: 320, 323, 325, 326, 330, 333, 334, 337, 351, 352, 354, 364, 371, 372, 381, 382, 385, 392, 396, 412, 413, 458-459, 468-469, 471, 478-479, 499.
  • 6 hours of supporting courses (confer with departmental chairperson)

Pre-Law (60 credit hours): Required courses +

  • 3 credit hours: GEOG 106
  • 12 hours: HIST 237, 337, 351, and 413
  • 6 hours: ENGL 250 and 353
  • 6 hours: PHIL 302 and 343
  • 6 hours: POSC 390 and 415
  • 3 hours: SPCH 201

International History and Diplomacy (57 credits): Required courses +
