Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve

Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve benefits, also known as (Chapter 1606) benefits are available to members of the selected reserves from the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, and Coast Guard Reserves are also eligible. This benefit eligibility is determined by Selective Reserves Components and payments are managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Eligibility

  • The service member must enter into a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985.  Officers must agree to serve six years in addition to their original obligation. For some types of training, it is necessary to have a six-year commitment that begins after Sept. 30, 1990.
  • Complete your initial active duty for training (IADT).
  • Must meet the requirement to receive a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before completing IADT. You may not use 12 hours toward a college degree to meet this requirement.
  • Must remain in good standing while serving in an active Selected Reserve unit. You will also retain MGIB-SR eligibility if you were discharged from Selected Reserve service due to a disability that was not caused by misconduct. Your eligibility period may be extended if you are ordered to active duty.

Approved and want to get an enrollment processed and submitted to the Department of Veterans Affairs to complete the mandatory MILITARY FUNDING REQUEST FORM for each term that you want to utilize this benefit.

Types of Training

Educational benefits under Chapter 1606 can be used for college degrees and certificate programs, technical or vocational programs/courses, cooperative training, correspondence courses, certain entrance examinations, flight training, apprenticeships or on-the-job training, licensing and certification tests, high-tech training and entrepreneurship training. There are also remedial, deficiency, and refresher course permissions allowed with situational reviews.
