BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Simone Gibson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Morgan State University and serves as the Assistant Director for Literacy at the National Center for the Elimination of Educational Disparities (NCEED). A literacy specialist, she focuses on equipping both pre-service and in-service teachers with culturally responsive, evidence-based strategies to improve reading instruction. She co-directs the Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity (MILE), a partnership with the University of Maryland that addresses systemic literacy inequities across the state.

RESEARCH INTEREST(S):

Dr. Simone Gibson’s research interests center on literacy education, with a focus on culturally responsive pedagogy, equity in reading instruction, and the preparation of teachers to serve diverse student populations. She explores how culturally humble, evidence-based literacy practices can improve outcomes for marginalized students, particularly in urban school settings. Her work also investigates teacher identity development, critical literacy, and strategies to disrupt systemic disparities in education through reflective and inclusive teaching methods. Additionally, she is invested in community based literacy initiatives and collaborative partnerships that support equitable access to high-quality reading instruction.
