First Year

Academic Advising

Each first-time freshman at Morgan State University is assigned an academic advisor from either the Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA) or the Office of Student Success and Retention (OSSR). Your advisor will assist you with course selection, academic planning, and connecting you to campus resources. To find your advisor, log in to your Navigate360 account under the Banner/WebSIS page, then scroll down to “Your Success Team” to find their name and contact information. If you do not see your advisor listed, you can send an email to the Advising Hotline at advising@morgan.edu.

New Student Orientation (NSO)

The Bear Necessities New Student Orientation (NSO) is a mandatory program designed to help you acclimate to university life. This program provides essential information about academic expectations, campus resources, and community engagement, setting the foundation for your success at Morgan State.

First-Year Events

To enrich your first-year experience, Morgan State University organizes various events, including:

• Matriculation Convocation: An official welcoming ceremony where faculty, staff, and students greet and welcome new students entering the University for the first time. Attendance is mandatory for all Morgan freshmen and sophomores.

• Founders Day Convocation: An annual event recognizing the institution’s journey from its charter in 1867 to today, celebrating the many milestones achieved during its existence. Freshmen and sophomores are required to attend.

• Networking Mixers: Opportunities for students to connect with industry professionals, alumni, and peers, fostering relationships that can enhance your academic and professional journey.

• Advising Fairs: Events designed to help you connect with academic advisors, understand degree requirements, and plan your academic journey effectively.

We encourage you to take full advantage of these resources to ensure a successful and fulfilling first year at Morgan State University. Remember, the OSSR is here to support you from matriculation to graduation, fostering your academic success and personal development.
