Dr. Brandon Harrison-Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at Morgan State University. His research focuses on developing affordable diagnostic and sensor technologies that support early detection and monitoring across healthcare, environmental, and infrastructure systems. By characterizing biological and physical signals, his work seeks to inform proactive solutions in areas ranging from neonatal care to coastal and power grid monitoring.
He designs and evaluates diagnostic platforms that may incorporate optical sensing, embedded systems, or wireless communication—sometimes leveraging mobile devices, but always driven by the needs of accuracy, accessibility, and adaptability. His environmental work includes the development of low-cost systems for assessing coastal changes, such as Sargassum decomposition, and monitoring energy system performance using physical signal signatures.
Dr. Harrison-Smith earned his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Temple University and his B.S. in Chemistry from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. He is committed to creating research experiences that prepare students to address real-world engineering challenges with rigor and creativity. His work is supported by national agencies and industry partners, and he contributes to shaping new directions in diagnostic engineering and intelligent sensing systems.
In addition to his research, Dr. Harrison-Smith is the host of The B-Xcellent Podcast, a platform that shares insights on scientific careers, technical development, and strategies for navigating academic and professional environments in engineering and science.
