Travel and Re-Entry for F-1 Visa Holders
The Division of International Student and Faculty Affairs advises International students to proceed with caution when travelling overseas, as U.S. immigration policies are subject to sudden changes. International Students who plan to travel abroad for visa renewals should be aware that, particularly for expired visas, they may face delays that could disrupt their return and academic continuity. The Division of International Student and Faculty Affairs cannot guarantee reentry to the U.S. Currently, domestic travel is not expected to be impacted.
Electronic Devices: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) may inspect electronic devices and review social media activity upon entry to the United States.
Online Presence: Ensure your digital footprint, including social media and apps, reflects compliance with U.S. laws and visa regulations, and presents a professional image to immigration officials.
Entry Requirements: On arrival, CBP will require proof of valid F-1 status, Valid I-20, Required documents will vary depending on whether you are currently enrolled, on OPT, or STEM OPT.
F-1 Visa Holders enrolled in Degree Program – Required Documents for Travel
Ensure you carry the following documents when re-entering the U.S.:

Passport – Must be valid for at least six months beyond your entry date.

Most Recent Form I-20 – Must include a valid travel signature (valid for 12 months from the date signed).

I-901 SEVIS Fee Receipt – Available at www.fmjfee.com.

Official Transcripts

Proof of Enrollment – For the current or upcoming academic term.

Financial Documentation – Such as a bank statement or a letter from your department confirming sufficient funding to meet or exceed the amount listed on your I-20.
F-1 Visa Holders on OPT or STEM OPT – Required Documents for Travel

Passport: Must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended return date.

F-1 Visa: Must be valid and unexpired.

Most Recent Form I-20: Must include a valid travel signature (signatures are valid for 6 months for students on OPT/STEM OPT).

I-901 SEVIS Fee Receipt: Print a copy from www.fmjfee.com.

Valid EAD (Employment Authorization Document).

Proof of Employment: Acceptable documents include an employment verification letter, offer letter, or recent pay stub. The employer’s name must match what appears on page 2 of your I-20.

Travel Signature on I-20: Ensure your I-20 has a current travel endorsement from your DSO.
