About the Musical Theatre Program

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Musical Theatre at Morgan State University is a bold, artist-centered training ground where excellence meets purpose. As one of the few HBCUs in the nation to offer this degree, the program stands at the forefront of a new era in arts education—one that celebrates discipline, creativity, and cultural legacy.

Housed within Murphy Fine Arts Center, where we have a state-of-the-art performance venue - Gilliam Hall, the program combines intensive conservatory-style training with a liberal arts foundation that empowers students to use their voices, bodies, and stories to change the world. Each semester, students bring dynamic productions to life on stage—from classic Broadway revivals to groundbreaking new works—gaining real-world experience in every aspect of the production process.

Our core curriculum immerses students in the full spectrum of the craft, with courses including:

  • Acting I–IV (scene study, character development, and advanced performance)

  • Voice and Speech for the Actor

  • Musicianship and Music Theory

  • Musical Theatre Techniques I & II

  • History of the American Musical

  • Dance for Musical Theatre I–IV (ballet, jazz, modern, and tap foundations)

  • Script Analysis and Song Interpretation

  • Audition Techniques and Career Readiness

Beyond the classroom, our students participate in high-impact workshops and professional intensives designed to build the next generation of performers, creators, and leaders. Workshops include:

  • Auditioning for Broadway and Film/TV

  • Stage Management and Production Leadership

  • Vocal Health and Maintenance for Performers

  • Hip-Hop, Modern, Tap, and Ballet Masterclasses

  • Acting for the Camera and Self-Tape Preparation

  • Guest Industry Panels with Agents, Casting Directors, and Creative Executives

Students regularly work alongside Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award–winning artists, whose mentorship and masterclasses offer direct access to the professional world. Recent guests have included Broadway performers, recording artists, and leading choreographers who bring the highest level of artistry to Morgan’s stage.

More than a degree, the Morgan State B.F.A. in Musical Theatre is a movement—dedicated to training versatile, fearless, and socially conscious artists who will define the future of the performing arts.
