Shooting Suspects Identified Leading to an Arrest

by Morgan State U
October 13, 2023

Dear Morgan Community:

I am pleased to share with you an update on the ongoing investigation surrounding the unfortunate events that occurred on our campus on October 3rd. This morning, we are expecting the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) to announce the arrest of one of the alleged shooters in the heinous and very deliberate act of violence that unfolded during Morgan’s Homecoming Week activities. BPD has arrested a 17-year-old male in Washington, D.C. and issued an attempted murder warrant for another 18-year-old male in connection to this shooting. Neither are Morgan students nor have a connection to this university.

Specific information regarding the details related to the two individuals will be provided by BPD in their announcement, which will be made momentarily. Thanks to the efforts of BPD, who oversaw the investigation, in collaboration with the Morgan State University Police (MSUPD), two individuals were identified, and one suspect was apprehended for his alleged connection to the shooting. This individual is currently in custody and thankfully, is no longer a threat to our community.

On behalf of the Morgan Community, I extend our gratitude to all the law enforcement involved in making this happen. As a result of their diligent investigative work, a significant break in the case occurred leading to the apprehension of a suspect. Additionally, I offer thanks to Governor Wes Moore and Mayor Brandon Scott for their continued outreach and support throughout this ordeal. I also would like to recognize all of those who showed the courage in coming forward to assist in this investigation by supplying key information leading to the arrest of the suspected assailant.

While we take comfort in knowing that a suspect has been captured, we must understand that this investigation is still ongoing and won’t be concluded until everyone involved in the shooting is apprehended. Please know that violence of any kind is never accepted and will not be tolerated on our campus. And should this investigation reveal the involvement of any member of our community, there will be consequences.

Despite the arrest that has been made, the University will continue its commitment the security of this campus and implementing the many safety enhancements that have been called for in our Campus Safety Enhancement plan.

Lastly, let me acknowledge and thank the members of the MSUPD who have amped up their efforts to further secure the campus since the incident. I appreciate their unwavering commitment to protect and serve our National Treasure.

Remember, we are family. We are a vibrant community. We are a place for peace, preparation, and purpose. We are Morgan strong.

Respectfully,
