Renewing Your F-1 Visa Stamp at the US Embassy

F-1 Visa Renewal: Key Guidelines and Recommendations

Before applying to renew your F-1 visa, be sure to review the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you plan to apply. Specific procedures, processing times, and document requirements may vary by location.

General Recommendations:

  • Whenever possible, apply for your F-1 visa in your home country.

  • Plan ahead and expect possible delays—especially during holidays or peak travel seasons. Security checks can delay visa processing by several weeks.

  • Please note: Neither UCSF nor the ISSO can intervene or expedite security clearance processes. Unfortunately, there is no known way to fast-track a security check; you must simply wait for it to be completed.

SEVIS Fee Information:

  • The SEVIS fee is a one-time payment made before you begin your F-1 program. If your SEVIS number remains unchanged, you are not required to pay the fee again when renewing your visa.

Important Reminder:

  • F-1 visas can only be renewed at a U.S. embassy or consulate outside the United States. Visa renewal from within the U.S. is not permitted.

Typical Steps for Visa Renewal:

  1. Complete the DS-160 Nonimmigrant Visa Application.

  2. Pay the Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV) application fee.

  3. If required, schedule your visa interview directly with the U.S. Consulate or Embassy. (Appointments are not scheduled for you.)

  4. Refer to the U.S. Department of State website for helpful interview preparation tips.

  5. If your interview is waived or you are attending in person, prepare to send or bring the required documentation, including:

    • Valid passport

    • Form I-20 with current travel signature

    • Employment authorization documents (if on OPT/STEM OPT)

    • Proof of continued enrollment or employment

    • SEVIS fee receipt (if applicable)

    • Visa appointment confirmation and DS-160 confirmation page
