Confidentiality:

Counseling often deals with sensitive and private issues. The therapeutic relationship and what is discussed in counseling is considered privileged and protected by law. At the counseling center, we adhere to professional, legal, and ethical guidelines outlined by the State of Maryland, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, and the American Counseling Association. The information you divulge in counseling, in addition to appointment information and records, will not be disclosed to any person outside of the counseling center's professional staff without your written permission. Your records at the counseling center are kept separate from your academic records and professors, staff, administrators, and parents do not have access to these records without your permission or a court order.

However, under Maryland law, there are instances in which we would be required to disclose information without the permission of the client in order to protect the client/public. These instances are:

  • You are considered an immediate risk of harming yourself
  • You are considered an immediate risk of harming others 
  • Cases of ongoing or suspected abuse or neglect of minors 
  • Cases of ongoing or suspected abuse or neglect of elders and vulnerable adults 
  • A court order
