What Is My Insurance ID Card?

Your SHIP insurance ID card contains important information that healthcare providers, pharmacies, hospitals, urgent care centers, and specialists may need when verifying your coverage. Students should always carry a copy of their insurance card or have access to a digital version on their mobile device.

Through your UnitedHealthcare Student Resources account, you can view, download, print, or replace your insurance ID card at any time. If you are seeking medical care away from campus, your insurance ID card can help providers verify your eligibility and benefits.

How Do I Find Medical Care?

Students enrolled in SHIP have access to UnitedHealthcare's nationwide provider network. Using in-network providers may help reduce out-of-pocket expenses and ensure access to the highest level of plan benefits.

Students can search for healthcare providers based on location, specialty, and healthcare needs. Available provider searches may include:

  • Primary Care Providers (PCPs)
  • Specialists
  • Urgent Care Centers
  • Hospitals
  • Behavioral and Mental Health Providers
  • Laboratory Services
  • Physical Therapy Providers
  • Women's Health Providers

To find a provider, log in to your UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) account and select the provider search tool. You can search by provider name, specialty, facility type, or location and filter results based on your healthcare needs. If you have not yet created a UHCSR account, follow the account registration instructions on this page before attempting to search for providers.

Students are encouraged to verify that a provider participates in the UnitedHealthcare network before receiving services.

What Prescription Benefits Are Included?

The Student Health Insurance Plan includes prescription drug coverage to help students manage both short-term and ongoing healthcare needs. Students can use participating pharmacies to obtain covered medications and review prescription benefits through their UnitedHealthcare account.

Prescription resources may help students:

  • Locate participating pharmacies
  • Search for nearby in-network pharmacies through the UnitedHealthcare member portal
  • Review prescription coverage information
  • Understand medication costs and copayments
  • Access information regarding covered medications and drug formularies
  • Review pharmacy benefit resources
  • Find participating retail, mail-order, and specialty pharmacies when applicable

Students can log in to their UnitedHealthcare Student Resources account to search for pharmacies, review covered medications, and access prescription benefit information. When filling a prescription, students should present their insurance information to ensure benefits are applied correctly.

Claims & Explanation of Benefits (EOBs)

After receiving healthcare services, claims are submitted to UnitedHealthcare for processing. Students can monitor the status of submitted claims and review their Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) through their online account.

To view claims and EOBs, log in to your UnitedHealthcare Student Resources account and navigate to the Claims section of the member portal. From there, you can review claim details, check claim status, and access available EOB documents.

An Explanation of Benefits is not a bill. It is a summary document that explains:

  • Healthcare services received
  • Charges submitted by the provider
  • Amounts covered by insurance
  • Student financial responsibility, if any
  • Claim processing details

Reviewing claims and EOBs can help students better understand how their health insurance benefits are being utilized and identify any potential issues that may require follow-up.

Can I Use My SHIP Coverage Outside of Maryland?

Can I Use My SHIP Coverage Outside of Maryland?

Yes. Students enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) have access to UnitedHealthcare's nationwide provider network and may use their coverage while traveling, studying, completing internships, participating in academic programs, or residing outside of Maryland.

Students can search for participating healthcare providers, urgent care centers, hospitals, pharmacies, and behavioral health providers throughout the United States by logging into their UnitedHealthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) account and using the provider search tool.

Before receiving non-emergency medical care, students are encouraged to verify that the provider participates in the UnitedHealthcare network to maximize benefits and minimize out-of-pocket expenses.

Traveling Within the United States

Students who are away from campus during academic breaks, internships, summer employment, study-away programs, or visits home may continue to access covered healthcare services through participating UnitedHealthcare providers nationwide.

Students should:

  • Carry their insurance ID card or have access to a digital copy
  • Verify that providers participate in the UnitedHealthcare network
  • Locate nearby urgent care centers and hospitals before services are needed
  • Review their benefits and coverage information through their UHCSR account

Emergency Medical Care

If you experience a medical emergency, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency facility. Emergency services are generally covered regardless of location; however, students should contact UnitedHealthcare Student Resources as soon as practical following emergency treatment to understand any claim or follow-up requirements.

International Travel and Study Abroad

Students traveling or studying outside of the United States may have access to international benefits through the Student Health Insurance Plan; however, coverage, reimbursement procedures, and available services may vary by country and healthcare provider.

Students planning international travel are strongly encouraged to:

  • Review their international coverage benefits before departure
  • Carry a copy of their insurance ID card
  • Save UnitedHealthcare Student Resources contact information
  • Understand claim submission and reimbursement requirements for services received outside of the United States
  • Contact UnitedHealthcare Student Resources before traveling if they have questions regarding international coverage

Need Assistance While Traveling?

Students can access their UHCSR account to:

  • Locate Providers
  • Access their insurance ID card
  • Review benefits information
  • Access telehealth resources when available
  • Obtain customer service assistance

For questions regarding coverage while traveling within the United States or internationally, contact UnitedHealthcare Student Resources before your trip to understand available benefits and any applicable requirements.

Urgent Care vs Emergency Room

Choosing the appropriate level of care can help students receive treatment more quickly and may reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

Urgent Care Centers are generally appropriate for:

  • Minor illnesses
  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Minor injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Ear infections
  • Minor cuts requiring stitches

Emergency Rooms should be used for:

  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe injuries
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Serious allergic reactions
  • Any life-threatening medical condition

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or seek immediate emergency medical care.
